Smith the Victor in Petty Sportsman Show

RIVER GLADE, NB (July 1, 2012) - Nova Scotia sportsman series champion Colby Smith was the winner in Sunday's GT Enterprises Sportsman 150 at Petty International Raceway. Smith won the race in convincing fashion leading 77 laps en route to the win. Matt Maillet was second and Dave O'Blenis (winner of the first two sportsman races at Petty this year) was third. Russell Smith Jr and Shawn McLean rounded out the top five.

Smith was at the point after the first half of the race but 11th on the second segment restart after the top 11 runners were inverted for the restart. By lap 96 he was fifth and he retook the top spot at lap 125, holding on for the win. The race saw six different leaders (Smith, 77 laps; McLean, three laps; O'Blenis, 26 laps; Bill Sommerville, 21 laps; Laurie Cormier, five laps; and Maillet, 18 laps). There were 11 caution periods.

Sportsman heat race winners included McLean, Smith, and Chris Reid. Twenty-four drivers entered the event. Round four of six on the 2012 GT Enterprises Sportsman Series at Petty Int'l Raceway is August 4.

The Leisure Days RV Bandoleros opened the racing action Sunday with Dana Hamm and Cole Boudreau picking up heat race wins; Hamm won the Bandoleros feature followed by Drew Greenlaw, Braden Langille, Cole Boudreau, and Alexandra O'Blenis.

In Mister Transmission Mini Stock racing it was Andrew Cluett and Gerald Brun winning the heats; Cluett won the feature with Deven Smith second, Dustin Phillips third, Randy Campbell fourth, and Joshua Moore fifth.

The Street Stock division saw Rick Cashol and Devin Snell win the heat races. Martin Landry was the winner of the feature, followed by Snell, Cashol, Marshall Barry, and James "Cooter" Smith.

Petty International Raceway returns to action in two weeks on July 14 with the inaugural running of the Oval Outlaw Triple 44's Presented by O'Blenis & Sons Roofing and Siding - in which sportsman, street stock, and Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) cars will compete in the same race. The show will also see a 50-lap feature for the Mister Transmission Mini Stocks, as well as racing in the Leisure Days RV Bandoleros division, and a visit by the Eastern Mini Cup Series. Post time is 6 p.m. July 14.
