About Petty International Raceway

Call it a labour of love.

A love of stock car racing for Petty International Raceway owners Brett Benoit, Craig McFetridge, and Wayne Smith - all three Halifax, Nova Scotia businessmen, and each having already enjoyed success in their own area of expertise.

So why would they embark on a venture that would see a need to leave home as early as 5 a.m. some mornings in order to make a 9 a.m. meeting in Moncton? Or to spend hours, days, even weekends physically refurbishing - in some areas rebuilding, supporting infrastructure at their new home away from home in River Glade, New Brunswick?

The answer is simple for any race fan: it's a labour of love, for racing.

In fact, it is racing that brought them together with Benoit and McFetridge becoming friends of Smith through their longtime sponsorships of Smith's familiar No. 44 race car. Together they have enjoyed championships and challenges, enjoying the highs - and the lows, with a mutual passion for all things racing.

So it didn't take long to act in the fall of 2010 when the idea was tabled that they should see about re-opening the Petty track. A call to former owner Jerry Campbell and the group was, literally, off to the races. Once the i's were dotted and t's crossed on the sale the work began. Major renovations included the relocation of the pit area from the infield to the back stretch, as well as almost completely rebuilding the tower, and a complete clean-up of the grounds.

The trio plan to walk before they run but eventually hope to restore Petty International Raceway to its former glory when it was widely regarded as one of the premiere motorsports facilities in eastern Canada. Six special events are planned for the re-opening season with the possibility of growth in 2012, and beyond.
